Our new approach builds upon
decades of proven science
The science of photomorphogenesis, or light-mediated plant development, is well-established. BioLumic’s unique edge to rapidly unlocking desired crop traits is driven by our UV Light Signal Platform.
Our platform can deploy trillions of different UV Light Recipes, and is the first “In-Seed” Light Treatment. Based on 20 years of R&D, our platform has demonstrated control of more than 200 traits across 12 crops.
Partnering with leading seed producers
BioLumic integrates light treatments at the seed production level, so the seeds are fully activated when they reach the grower. The light treatments are short-duration, taking only seconds to administer - but with the treatment effects stored by the seed through the season and beyond. Our treatments are stackable and work synergistically with traditional seed treatments. The result is new traits expressed quickly and without any changes to the underlying genome, both averting the regulatory hurdles of conventionally developed GMO crops, and accelerating time to market.
Our platform’s impact on row crops
BioLumic is the only company that treats seeds with light to activate genetic expression. In corn and soybean, we have demonstrated double digit yield gains and quality improvements with 3,000+ field trial plots executed in the US to date. Highlights from the 2023 field evaluations across 2,280 plots in 12 states include:
• +4.6 bu/ac advantage on 4 corn inbred lines
• +4.7 bu/ac advantage & 87% win rate on hybrid corn across 15 locations
• +3.1 bu/ac advantage & 80% win rate in multi-year soybean trialing program
Bringing in-seed light treatments to commercial scale
BioLumic has partnered with Gro Alliance, North America’s largest independently owned contract corn and soybean seed production company, to propel commercial-scale entry of UV light technology into the global row-crop seed industry. We are working with select seed companies to activate in-seed light treatments on their cultivars in a multi-year development program, with commercialization targeted for 2025.

Unlocking sustainable global rice production
BioLumic received $2.1M in grant funding from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to use BioLumic’s proprietary in-seed light treatment technology to enhance the crop performance of rice - specifically Direct Dry Seeded Rice (DDSR), rice grown using sustainable practices. Our approach will be to rapidly unlock essential plant traits, including uniform and early rice seedling growth, weed competitiveness and drought tolerance to support in India, a nation accounting for nearly one-fourth of global rice production.
