BioLumic xTraits™ Named One of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2026
TIME has named BioLumic xTraits™ one of its Best Inventions of 2026.
Developing a new biotech trait can take more than a decade and around $100 million. That math only works for a few big crops in a few big markets, leaving many of the staple crops that feed the world behind.
xTraits takes a different approach. Every seed carries untapped potential, and xTraits unlocks it with powerful, precise light signals before planting, turning up the genes that help a plant thrive. It works more like a dimmer switch to regulate genetic expression. No chemicals are used, and because nothing in the plant’s DNA changes, xTraits avoids the regulatory hurdles of biotech traits. Most importantly, nothing changes for the farmer.
The result is more productive crops with a stronger start, that hold up under climate stress. In trials, that’s meant more stable yields across growing conditions, corn holding its yield on less nitrogen, and rice that establishes better without flooded paddies, a shift that saves water and cuts methane emissions.
We’re grateful to TIME for the recognition, and to the partners, researchers, and growers working alongside us.
