BioLumic's ultraviolet xTraits take a step forward

Farmers Weekly dives into BioLumic's advancement in ultraviolet (UV) seed activation technology, which is poised to enter large-scale corn, rice and now ryegrass markets. BioLumic's New-Zealand developed xTraits™ use UV light to alter seed behavior, enhancing traits like yield and energy levels without modifying DNA. Following investment from Fonterra’s Ki Tua Fund, BioLumic is now exploring applications in ryegrass for the dairy industry, with laboratory trials showing increased lipid levels that could reduce methane emissions by up to 12%. Field trials for ryegrass are expected to begin next year, aiming for market release by 2027-28.
